Indiana business entity search and name check

Indiana business filings live in INBiz, the Secretary of State's online system, and you check names on its public business search. That search turns away automated requests, so we send you to it instead of searching it here. Forming an LLC online costs $95, and instead of an annual report Indiana asks for a Business Entity Report every two years, in the month you formed.

How we search Indiana
Official site only (we hand you off). Indiana's business search blocks automated requests at a security filter before they reach the search, and we don't try to get around it. Search it yourself in your browser.
What a result can tell you
Searching the official site shows names on record. Indiana decides acceptance when you file.

What the Indiana search covers

Indiana and out-of-state business corporations, LLCs (including master and series LLCs), limited partnerships, LLPs, nonprofits and agricultural cooperatives registered with the Secretary of State, plus assumed names filed there by those entities. Assumed names used by individuals and general partnerships are filed with county recorders and aren't in this search (IC 23-0.5-3-4).

Each record has a Business ID. Search by number on the INBiz.

How to read Indiana results

Indiana uses its own status labels. We always show the official wording; here is what the common ones mean according to the state:

StatusWhat it means
Administratively dissolvedThe Secretary of State dissolved the entity. Its name stays protected for 120 days, and it can be reinstated (online fee $20 plus the online access fee). Source: iga.in.gov

A status describes the registry filing only. It isn’t evidence of a license, tax compliance or reputation, and a record with the same name as a company you know may be a different business. More on statuses.

Indiana business name rules

An LLC name must include one of: limited liability company, L.L.C., LLC. A corporation uses one of: corporation, incorporated, company, limited, Corp., Inc., Co., Ltd..

Your name must be distinguishable on the Secretary of State's records from existing Indiana entities, entities administratively dissolved in the last 120 days, registered out-of-state entities, reserved names and assumed names registered with the Secretary of State. (IC 23-0.5-3-1) Source: iga.in.gov

When comparing names, Indiana disregards: entity-type words and abbreviations such as Corporation, Inc., Company, Co., Limited, Ltd., LP, LLP, PC, PSC and LLC. Our name check applies these same rules.

Words that need approval or are restricted

medicalOnly a professional corporation whose shareholders are all physicians licensed under IC 25-22.5 may use it. Source: iga.in.gov

Professional LLCs

A professional corporation must use "Professional Service Corporation" or "Professional Corporation", or an abbreviation of either (IC 23-0.5-3-2(a)).

Using a similar name with consent

Yes. An existing entity can give written consent to your use of its name, but no one can consent to the use of a reserved name (IC 23-0.5-3-1(b)).

Reserving a name in Indiana

Indiana lets you reserve a name before you form the business for $10, held for 120 days. You can renew it for further 120-day periods, $10 each online.

Reservations can only be filed online through INBiz. Give the applicant's name and address and the name you want, without the entity-type ending.

Searching on this site doesn’t reserve anything. Only Business Services Division can.

$95 state fee

You fill in the Articles of Organization yourself and pay only the state. You’ll need a registered agent with a Indiana street address; that can be you if you have one.

Use a formation service

A service prepares and files the paperwork, and most can act as your registered agent and send compliance reminders. You still pay the state fee on top of their price, and the state still decides whether to accept your name.
