Oregon business entity search and name check

We search Oregon using the list of active businesses that the Secretary of State's Corporation Division publishes on data.oregon.gov each week, so results here cover active records only. For inactive businesses and filings, use the state's Business Registry Business Name Search, which we link to with your search already filled in. Oregon checks a new LLC name against assumed business names as well as other entities, and there is no consent-letter route around a conflict.

What the Oregon search covers

Oregon's Business Registry covers corporations (business, professional and nonprofit), LLCs, limited partnerships, LLPs, cooperatives, business trusts, assumed business names, and reserved and registered names, for both Oregon and out-of-state businesses. Our links to the official search ask for both active and inactive records.

When you search Oregon here, keep in mind:

  • Only active Oregon registrations are published in this dataset. Inactive names are not included, so an inactive record with your name would not appear here.
  • Published weekly by the Secretary of State; filings from the past week may be missing.
  • Includes assumed business names, which in Oregon can block an entity name.

Each record has a Registry Number (for example 158641598). Choose “Look up an existing business”, then “Registry number”, to search by it.

How to read Oregon results

Oregon uses its own status labels. We always show the official wording; here is what the common ones mean according to the state:

StatusWhat it means
ACT (Active)The business is active on the Registry. The state's open-data list of active businesses, which we search, contains only these. Source: data.oregon.gov
INA (Inactive)The business is no longer active, for example dissolved, withdrawn or expired. These records appear in the official search but not in the active-business data we search. Source: egov.sos.state.or.us

A status describes the registry filing only. It isn’t evidence of a license, tax compliance or reputation, and a record with the same name as a company you know may be a different business. More on statuses.

Oregon business name rules

An LLC name must include one of: limited liability company, L.L.C., LLC.

Your LLC name must be distinguishable, on the Secretary of State's records, from every active LLC, corporation, professional corporation, nonprofit, cooperative, limited partnership and business trust, and from reserved names, registered corporate names and assumed business names. (ORS 63.094(4)) Source: oregonlegislature.gov

Oregon doesn’t publish a list of the differences it ignores, so our check treats only capitalization and punctuation as insignificant and flags other close names as similar for you to judge.

Words that need approval or are restricted

WordsRequirement
cooperative, corporation, corp., incorporated, Inc., limited partnership, L.P., LP, Ltd., limited liability partnership, L.L.P., LLPAn LLC name can't contain these words or abbreviations, or variations of them, because they signal a different kind of business. Source: oregonlegislature.gov

Using a similar name with consent

Oregon law has no consent option. A name that isn't distinguishable is allowed only if you file a certified court judgment showing you have a prior or concurrent right to it.

Reserving a name in Oregon

Oregon lets you reserve a name before you form the business for $100, held for 120 days.

File an Application for Name Reservation with the Corporation Division. Assumed business names can't be reserved.

$100 state fee

You fill in the Articles of Organization yourself and pay only the state. You’ll need a registered agent with a Oregon street address; that can be you if you have one.

File with Corporation Division

Use a formation service

A service prepares and files the paperwork, and most can act as your registered agent and send compliance reminders. You still pay the state fee on top of their price, and the state still decides whether to accept your name.
