Utah business entity search and name check

At $59, Utah has one of the lowest LLC filing fees in the country, and the yearly renewal is $18. Business records are kept by the Department of Commerce's Division of Corporations and Commercial Code, whose Business Entity Records Search lets you look up a business by name, entity number, principal or registered agent. This site doesn't search Utah's records itself; we link you straight to that official search.

What a result can tell you
Searching the official site shows names on record. Utah decides acceptance when you file.

What the Utah search covers

The search covers every type of business entity registered with the Division: corporations, nonprofit corporations, LLCs (including series, benefit and low-profit LLCs), limited partnerships, limited liability partnerships, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), cooperatives and out-of-state entities registered in Utah. It also includes assumed names (DBAs). Trademarks are searched separately. Inactive and expired records appear to be included, but we couldn't confirm this.

The Division says you can search by business or by principal. Searching a principal's or registered agent's name lists every business connected to that person. We couldn't confirm how name searches match.

Each record has a Entity Number. Search by number on the Business Entity Records Search (businessregistration.utah.gov).

How to read Utah results

Utah uses its own status labels. We always show the official wording; here is what the common ones mean according to the state:

StatusWhat it means
ActiveThe business is up to date on its annual renewal. Source: commerce.utah.gov
Delinquent / ExpiredThe business missed its annual renewal. To bring it back, it pays a reinstatement fee plus $18 for each missed year and a $10 delinquency fee. Source: commerce.utah.gov

A status describes the registry filing only. It isn’t evidence of a license, tax compliance or reputation, and a record with the same name as a company you know may be a different business. More on statuses.

Utah business name rules

An LLC name must include one of: Limited Liability Company, Limited Company, L.L.C., L.C., LLC, LC. A corporation uses one of: Corporation, Incorporated, Company, Corp., Inc., Co..

Your name must be distinguishable from names already on the Division's records. The Division warns that even if a name looks available, nothing is final until it approves your filing. (Utah Code §48-3a-108 (LLC names); §16-10a-401 (corporations)) Source: le.utah.gov

Utah doesn’t publish a list of the differences it ignores, so our check treats only capitalization and punctuation as insignificant and flags other close names as similar for you to judge.

Professional LLCs

A professional LLC is its own entity type in Utah (Domestic Professional Limited Liability Company). We couldn't confirm its name-ending rules on an official page.

Reserving a name in Utah

Utah lets you reserve a name before you form the business for $22.

Reserve a name online through the Division's filing system, which requires a UtahID login.

Searching on this site doesn’t reserve anything. Only Division of Corporations can.

$59 state fee

You fill in the Certificate of Organization yourself and pay only the state. You’ll need a registered agent with a Utah street address; that can be you if you have one.

Use a formation service

A service prepares and files the paperwork, and most can act as your registered agent and send compliance reminders. You still pay the state fee on top of their price, and the state still decides whether to accept your name.
